Guang Embroidery refers to the embroidery in the ancient Guangzhou administration area, including Guangzhou, Panyu, Shunde, and Nanhai. Together with Suzhou (Su) Embroidery, Hunan (Xiang) Embroidery and Sichuan (Shu) Embroidery, Guang Embroidery became the Four Famous Chinese Embroideries of China. In 2006, Guang Embroidery, one of the traditional folk arts and crafts and representation of the Chinese culture, was enlisted in the First Batch of National Non-material Cultural Relics.
Similarly as the other three Famous Chinese Embroidery, Guang Embroidery has two major categories of products: products for daily use, including clothes, shoes, shawls, bedskirts, etc; and products for ornament, including screens, etc. Since its emergence, Guang Embroidery has focused on daily use.
The major making procedures of Guang Embroidery include: pattern design, drawing, manual printing, stretching, thread matching, embroidering, tidying up. Each work is the invention of the artist. Guang embroidery making, different from machine production, for several thousand years, has adopted pure handcraft. In this sense, each work is a unique one.
